Heavenly Errors
Heavenly Errors
By: Neil F. Comins
ISBN-10: 0231116446
ISBN-13: 9780231116442
Publisher: Columbia University Press – 2001-08-15
Hardcover | 288 Pages

From the Publisher:
Does the weather get warmer in summer because the Earth moves closer to the sun? That many people believe this is a perfect example of common sense leading to scientific misconception, the kind of misconception Neil Comins strives to set straight in Heavenly Errors. Comins is particularly eager to stamp out errors about astronomy, his field, and in his book he explores–and corrects–1,500 “commonly held” astronomical beliefs. Along the way, he investigates the nature of misconceptions, how and why we acquire them, and how to guard against them. He identifies external culprits, such as science fiction films, the Internet, and advertising, and examines how the psychological traits that help humans survive are poor tools for understanding “the real nature of the universe.” A writer and teacher, Comins can clearly explain astronomical concepts to non-scientists. This book, however, seems geared to freshman astronomy students, and not to the general science reader. –J.B. Peck

One of the great paradoxes of modern times is that the more scientists understand the natural world, the more we discover that our everyday beliefs about it are wrong. Astronomy, in particular, is one of the most misunderstood scientific disciplines.

With the participation of thousands of undergraduate students, Neil F. Comins has identified and classified, by origin and topic, over 1,700 commonly held misconceptions. Heavenly Errors provides access to all of them and explores many, including:

• Black holes suck in everything around them.
• The Sun shines by burning gas.
• Comets have tails trailing behind them.
• The Moon alone causes tides.
• Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun, is the hottest planet.

In the course of correcting these errors, he explains that some occur through the prevalence of pseudosciences such as astrology and UFO-logy and some enter the public conscience through the “bad astronomy” of Star Trek, Star Wars, and other science-fiction movies.. Perhaps most important, Professor Comins presents the reader with the methods for identifying and replacing incorrect ideas — tools with which to probe erroneous notions so that we can begin to question for ourselves… and to think more like scientists.

Practical Insight Into Cmmi, 2nd Edition

The second edition brings you up to speed on CMMI® Version 1.2 and includes new material on reviews and testing; quality factors, quality criteria, and quality metrics; physical architecture; change control boards, supplier agreement management; interfaces; constraints on alternative solutions; causal analysis techniques, evolving measurements; and applying CMMI® to manufacturing. Taking you beyond the Capability Maturity Model® to the integrated world of systems and software, this comprehensive resource presents CMMI® Version 1.2 in a manner that is easy to comprehend by higher-level managers and practitioners alike. Written by a world-renowned expert in the field, the book offers a clear picture of the activities an organization would be engaged in if their systems and software engineering processes were based on CMMI®. The book teaches the roles and responsibilities of professionals at all levels, from senior and middle management to project leaders and quality assurance personnel.

Offering a full appreciation of the power of CMMI® to enhance systems and software process improvement initiatives, this invaluable reference captures the essence of each of process area by presenting it in a practical context. From project monitoring and control, quality management, and requirements engineering, to risk management, integrated teams, and measurement programs, this authoritative volume provides you with a complete understanding of CMMI® and the benefits of this integrated approach in your organization.

Summary: Pragmatic and filled with ideas
Rating: 5

As in his previous book, ‘Action Focused Assessment for Software Process Improvement’ (ISBN 1580532861) Kasse does deep into issues and important factors without losing sight of the big picture. His approach to the CMMI is straightforward, but he also provides context and background, and is especially cogent in explaining the differences between the older CMM variants and the integrated model. I particularly liked the way he explains staged and continuous representation approaches, and how he leads you through choosing between the two if implementing CMMI is a goal.

The heart of this book, though, is the practical benefits from the CMMI and how to achieve them. He is heavily focused on how the CMMI relates to system engineering and project-based organizations, and goes into detail about integrated teaming, project and product management. In addition, there is a wealth of material on process improvement, quality and related topics such as requirements management. Mr. Kasse’s previous books and published works are heavily slanted towards those topics, so there should be no surprise about the amount of emphasis he given them in this book. Of course, the emphasis is warranted because process improvement and quality are two key goals of CMMI, as is integrated teamwork.

With a plethora of books about CMMI this one stands out because of the straightforward way Kasse describes the why’s and how’s, and the clarity with which he discusses implementation (and its barriers). There is no hype or hyperbole, unrealistic promises or contrived benefits – just plain talk that will give you a solid understanding of the CMMI and what it takes to implement it.

The Very Thought Of Education - Psychoanalysis (2009)

The Very Thought of Education – Psychoanalysis and the Impossible Professions (2009)
State University of New York Press | English | 2009-06-04 | ISBN: 1438426453 | 166 pages | PDF | 1 MB

A startling reading of the educational enterprise through a psychoanalytic lens.

Preface
Everything “started” when I had nothing more to say, when I no
longer knew where to end or how to end. At that moment, what
I had recounted before came back, but in a way that was entirely
other, in a discontinuous way, in different forms (memories,
dreams, slips, repetitions), or it never came back. I understood
that I had tried, by telling the story of “my life,” not to recount
it—it is too much for words—but to master it. I had been at once
foolish and unfaithful.

11 Days At The Edge: One Man's Spiritual Journey

Review
If you have wanted to go away on an 11-day retreat with spiritual teacher Andrew Cohen but haven’t been able to do it, this book will serve as an excellent substitute. In the summer of 2005, the author went to Montserrat, Spain, where he spent 11 days with his spiritual teacher. Luckily for us, he transcribed what took place and was given permission to share it with us. This is a 498-page book filled with wisdom; wisdom that will challenge much of what you think and believe, even if you have been on your spiritual journey for awhile. The retreat addressed enlightenment on both a personal and collective level and Cohen went very deep with the students. What I like about the book is that it is written in such a way that the reader can feel they are actually present in the room, eavesdropping while students ask questions and the teacher gives very pointed answers. The author is very generous in sharing his own thoughts, doubts, insights, and feelings which adds to the depth of the material. Not so much a book to be read, 11 Days at the Edge is one to be experienced, pondered, and befriended. The information contained in the book has the potential to move the reader into a deeper understanding of life itself. –New Spirit Journal

Product Description
Andrew Cohen is a controversial character. Enlightened teacher, evolutionary philosopher, revolutionary idealist and vocal cultural critic, he has sparked both rage and passion in the post-modern spiritual world. Uncompromising in his call for human transformation, people either love him or hate him. No one feels neutral. Why is it that Andrew Cohen has so angered some and so inspired others? Why is it that as a spiritual teacher with no tradition behind him he was invited to address the Parliament of World Religions in 2004? It is because of his ruthless deconstruction of cultural givens, his relentless quest to see things as they are and explore them in the light of liberated consciousness and his unyielding demand for integrity. In “Eleven Days at the Edge: A Journey into Evolutionary Enlightenment”, you will join the author on a retreat with Andrew to find this out firsthand, and also to discover a radical new spiritual paradigm that reinterprets the traditional revelation of enlightenment in the context of an evolving universe. The emergence of this paradigm helps us to discover that intersection between our spiritual longing, and our care for the world, where both are radically empowered to reach heights that neither could reach alone.

Summary: Devouring and Being Devoured
Rating: 5

In reading, 11 Days at the Edge: One Man’s Spiritual Journey into Evolutionary Enlightenment, I find myself devouring each word and at the same time being devoured by the Ground of Being and Authentic Self that Michael Wombacher writes about as he relays the teachings of Andrew Cohen.

This is a book that needs to be ingested slowly and read over and over again. I am underlining significant teachings on every page and literally feel as if I am receiving the transmission of Andrew Cohen through the written word.

This book will be transformative for anyone who has the courage and mettle to make a choice for the Authentic Self for the sake of the whole. Michael Wombacher has given spiritual seekers a great gift in writing this book. If the teachings of Andrew Cohen can be embraced wholeheartedly as mapped out in this book, we would all be awakening to our next level of spiritual potential together and there would be no need to look elsewhere!

Summary: spine straightening
Rating: 5

This book provided me with intermittant doses of character building. Because of the reflection and contemplation that accompanied each page I could usually read only a few pages at a time, but these small doses had the effect of character building in a spine straightening way.
I found myself looking forward to these doses of inspiration. Michael’s involvement with and explanation of Andrew Cohen’s teaching and the teacher’s own words orient us to the highest parts of ourselves and that which is also most challenging. To begin to respond to that challrnge produces that spine straightening effect and a new confidence in myself.

Summary: New road for spirituality
Rating: 4

Never has a book shaken up the spirituality thought process as this one. Just as most people thought they have found that level of spiruality that we seek to obtain, along comes Mr. Wombacher with his story of a new vision of enlightenment. His story of how his teacher, Andrew Cohen, has set a new vision on how his teachings can help the world today. This book is one of those that will have you thinking about your beliefs whether you it works for you or not. Just as religions are losing ground because they chose not to evolve, spirituality might be at the same crossroads. Does spirituality evolve or just stay the same? The fact that so many of the spirituality groups are not willing to see it as a possibility makes me want to investigate more. Andrew Cohen basically states that it will either work for you or it won’t. He allows everyone to make their own decision.

Summary: Add to your Spiritual Must Read List
Rating: 5

Michael Wombacher has made the wisdom of Andrew Cohen accessible to everyone through his candid account of being on retreat with him. Anyone who reads it can take away a useful & fulfilling approach to living in the modern world. The information shared is personally demanding and also an ideal spiritual companion to any major religion, code of ethics or 12 step program. Michael’s vibrant narrative is clear-cut and appealing. This book is a great read if you’re searching for higher meaning, have already found higher meaning or if you simply want to explore the terrain that new age spiritualism leaves out…the belief that we are accountable for everything we do and that everything matters. Regardless of your spirtiual altitude or religious allegiance this work is truly stirring in an interpersonal sense.

Summary: Armchair inner journey
Rating: 5

I am savoring every page of this book! It’s as if I am on retreat in Montserrat with Andrew and his students, only I have the luxury of reviewing the teachings in my own time and at length. In an actual retreat, one isn’t able to hit the replay button until the richness and depth of meaning sink in. This is more than an interesting and challenge collection of concepts however. The experience of reading this book demands action and a serious call to do the difficult work of one’s own exploration into the nature of consciousness. The author has beautifully captured the flavor of this inquiry in a way that pulls one into their own discovery process. Thank you Michael Wombacher!
